Underhill Arena lit up Feb. 5 as women’s hockey secured a close 3-2 win over the Central Maine Community College (CMCC) Mustangs.
Students packed the stands, waving handmade signs throughout the game, erupting after big plays, and bringing energy that matched the intensity on the ice to celebrate senior day.
“No matter if we win or lose, the team has fun, which makes it fun for everyone in the stands,” Sarah Lieber ’26, who was there to support her friends, said.
The Bobcats surged in the first period offensively, taking ten shots and scoring two goals. Forward Avery Cattier ‘28 gave the Bobcats an early lead off an assist from forward Zoe Ash ‘26.
Keeping the momentum, team captain and left wing Emma Rudy ‘27 converted a set up play from captain and center Sydney Bernstein ‘26 and right wing Casey Curtis ‘29, extending the lead to 2-0.
After a strong offensive start, tensions rose late in the period as frustration from the Mustangs spilled into a brief back and forth between players, drawing a loud reaction from the stands.
“Games against CMCC are always fun…and well matched,” Rudy said, reflecting on the game.
The high intensity rising in Underhill carried into the second period where the Bobcats quickly capitalized on a power-play opportunity. Forward Anna Weaver ‘28 found the back of the net for the third and final Bobcats goal assisted by Rudy.
The offensive pace slowed for the remainder of the second period, but the Bobcats maintained strong defensive pressure, holding the Mustangs scoreless heading into the third.
The beginning of the third period opened up with the Mustangs cutting into the lead scoring their first goal in 23 seconds. The Bobcats responded by tightening their defense, though the Mustangs added another goal later in the period, keeping the crowd on edge.
Despite the late surge from the Mustangs, the Bobcats held their ground showing strong offensive and defensive contributions including 16 saves from goalie Hazel Glazer ‘28 that helped secure a home victory.
“I think everyone who plays for Bates enjoys playing hard against CMCC, and it’s always fun to come out with a win,” Rudy said.
